If you just want to get your feet wet, and are on a very strict budget (<$100), I'd say try a Hotone Harmony. I also wanted warranty with an expensive pedal like that, so I bit the bullet and bought the H9, and used the one free algorithm you get with the pedal to 'buy' the MicroPitch algorithm. But the H9 has more options, and is smaller. Initially, I looked at a used Eventide Pitchfactor, which can be had for $250, if you're lucky. Even in a mono setting, it would sound bigger than any of the strict mono pedals out there.
DETUNE EFFECT SERIES
I got the PS-3 in the hopes of replacing two Hotone Harmony's with a single stereo pedal, as the PS-3 is the only Boss series pitch pedal that sums to mono. I enjoyed this one the most, notched settings on the dial are helpful.ĥ) Boss PS-3: sounded pretty good, but an absolute pain to set just right - no notched settings, small knobs in cramped interface, making it very difficult to get it just right. Lack of warmth, couldn't get rid of this one fast enough.Ĥ) Hotone Harmony: had a mix knob as opposed to the Pitchbox, my reason for getting it (and still budget). Unreliable - failed within a year.ģ) Digitech Luxe: this one sounded worse than the Pitchbox. Noisy (flanging artifact even when off!) No Mix capability. Both of these effects work best in stereo, or even better in a wet/dry/wet rig like EVH uses/ used to use. This pedal is used to control the pitch bending amount of the selected Harmony, Whammy, or Detune effect.

The detune effect is also from the undulator. Whammy and Detune effects do not have dry signal added to the effect signal. My pedal journey:ġ) Boss PS-5: it sounded very artificial to my ears, lack of warmth.Ģ) Mooer Pitchbox: was really excited about this one at first, until I learned to listen to what it did to my overall sound. Chorus in stereo tends to have a dry signal on one side and the wet on the other, whereas Detune has a detune signal in both. In intersections the electron velocity is faster than it inside an undulator and the optical phase is detuned. I wanted to get as close to the -9/+9 of the Eventide H3000 used during that time-frame. After experiencing the H9 MicroPitch algorithm in person, all those budget pedals now seem like toys to me.įrom the get-go my point of reference was the Van Halen live sound of 1991-1995. VoiceTone D1 thickens your live vocals with realistic doubling emulations, octaves, and detune effects in an easy-to-use pedal. Ditto with the budget pedals for this sound.
DETUNE EFFECT PORTABLE
It looks like a tomato, smells like a tomato, is spotless on the outside. That is, it lets you copy files from your portable device to your Macs hard disk. For those looking for this sound, consider this: Buying a budget detune pedal is like buying a greenhouse tomato in the middle of winter, labeled as 'farm fresh'. As much as I love the detune sound, I should have just gone out and bought the real thing the first time, Eventide (H9 or PitchFactor) - there's just no contest.
